How to Reduce Photo File Size While Preserving Quality: 5 Steps

Why Are Photo Files So Large?
Photo file size depends on more than pixel dimensions. Image content and export settings also matter. At the same width and height, a photograph with detailed foliage or hair may require more storage than an image with a plain background.
File format, compression method, quality settings, transparency, and metadata can also affect size. Applying the same settings to every photo will not produce the same percentage reduction.

Images with identical pixel dimensions can have different file sizes and quality. A smaller file does not necessarily have fewer pixels.
Step 1: Keep the Original and Define Your Purpose
Save a separate copy of the original before making changes. If the compressed version does not meet your needs, you can start again from the source.
Next, decide where the photo will be used. A small picture in a document needs different detail from a product photo that visitors can zoom in on.
- Check the destination’s accepted formats and file size limits.
- Confirm the intended display size and whether zooming is needed.
- If the image contains text, identify what must remain readable.
Meeting an upload limit is not enough if faces or important product details become blurry. Adjust the settings if essential details are lost.
Step 2: Reduce Unnecessarily Large Pixel Dimensions
If the photo is much larger than its intended use requires, consider resizing it first. Preserve the aspect ratio to prevent stretching or distortion.
For example, resizing a 4,000 × 3,000-pixel image to 2,000 × 1,500 pixels reduces the total pixel count to one quarter. However, the file size will not necessarily fall to one quarter of the original. The result depends on the format, content, and export settings.
High-density displays and zoom features may require larger images, so do not rely on the visible display dimensions alone. Enlarging a reduced image later will not restore the details removed during resizing.

If a PNG contains mostly photographic content and does not need transparency, compare JPG or WebP exports. Changing formats does not guarantee a smaller file, however.

Step 4: Start with High Quality and Compare Results
JPG: Lower the Quality Gradually
