JPG vs PNG
JPG uses lossy compression, is typically suitable for photographs and does not support transparency.
PNG is a lossless image format that supports transparency and is often useful for graphics, screenshots and editing. Photographic PNG files may be significantly larger than JPG files.
When should you convert JPG to PNG?
Convert when an application requires PNG, a service accepts PNG but not JPG, or your editing workflow needs a PNG file. Saving subsequent edits as PNG avoids additional JPEG compression; it does not recover detail already lost in the source.
PNG is not always the better choice. Keeping JPG may be more practical for sharing photographs or limiting website file sizes.
JPG to PNG FAQ
Does converting JPG to PNG improve image quality?
No. Converting JPG to PNG does not restore detail that was already lost during JPEG compression. PNG stores the decoded pixels losslessly, but it cannot undo the losses in the original JPG.
Can converting JPG to PNG make the background transparent?
No. Converting JPG to PNG does not automatically remove or make the background transparent. PNG supports transparency, but JPG files do not contain alpha transparency information. The existing background remains.
Why is my PNG larger than the original JPG?
PNG uses lossless compression rather than JPEG’s lossy compression. Photographs may produce significantly larger PNG files. Compare the actual source and output sizes shown after conversion.
Is JPEG the same as JPG?
Yes. JPG and JPEG are two file extensions for the same JPEG image format. Both are accepted here and produce a .png file.
Can I convert multiple JPG images to PNG?
Yes. Select multiple JPG or JPEG images and convert them together. Download each PNG separately, or download all completed results as a ZIP when at least two are ready. Duplicate output names receive a number.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. Your images are decoded and converted locally in your browser. Image files and generated PNGs stay on your device and are not uploaded to a server.
Will the dimensions and metadata stay the same?
The decoded image’s width and height are preserved without resizing. Browser decoding respects image orientation. Original EXIF, GPS and camera metadata are not copied to the PNG; keep the original if you need that information.
